Joanne
Joanne Fanny Barry has been practicing yoga for more than 30 Years and teaching for half that. She’s been in Tulum since 2004 and built and opened Tribal Tulum in 2015 to transform lives through yoga and connection. Joanne, grew with yoga in the western world as it enabled her to overcome intense change in her life. She inspires people through yoga, meditation and retreating into who you are. “The ability to assess and work with what is, is what yoga’s all about. That’s why it’s such great life tool.” Joanne’s accredited to teach by the AAAI/ISMA (American Aerobic Assoc. International/International Sports Medicine Assoc) with YUJMU Yin Yoga and a lifetime of practice and study with people like Baron Baptiste, Carmina Mock, all Tribal’s teachers and the incredible wisdom that life bring’s if you let it. She’s an engineer, breast cancer survivor, published author (aka Fanny Barry), artist and entrepreneur as well as B School grad who carries the philosophy of entrepreneurship and social responsibility into her business, her yoga and her life.
Chelsea
Chelsea is a California transplant who adores her sun-safe life. She began her practice at Moxie Yoga & Fitness in the Mission District of San Francisco and completed a 200-hour YTT in Tulum, Mexico. She’s passionate about her family, arm balances, good food, and her dog, Lulu and helping Tribal Tulum move and flow into the amazing place it is. Chelsea teaches online Vinyasa Flow and Meditation for our Virtual Retreat. She’s inspirational in her coaching on how to set up a home practice and her social media posts. She’s Joanne’s right and sometimes left hand as she works remotely with Tribal to keep it the organization and safe place to visit that it is. - Photo by Eduardo Alvarado
Eugenia
Eugenia, from Venezuela has been teaching yoga in Mexico since 2006. In 2009, she shifted her yoga focus from an open Hatha style to the Iyengar method. She completed her grade II Iyengar certification in 2015. Her discipline combined with her humor and love for yoga motivate her students toward a perfectly aligned asana practice. She teaches Iyengar yoga at Tribal and the wall ropes class, Karunta. Iyengar is a perfect compliment to all yoga styles since it creates a muscle memory that carries through to life on and off the mat.
Ursula
Ursula Grunewald is a professional dancer educated at Cuba’s National Art School in Havana. Born in Cancun, Mexico, she has a passion for yoga and it benefits to body and soul. A Yoga Alliance certified teacher with the Blooming Lotus School in Bali, she’s been practicing Yoga for more than 15 years. She’s moved from Tulum to start a family but her amazing classes are in our online library! Check her out there and dance with her in your home practice. Her mantra “In Lak’ech Ala K’in” (Mayan for “I am your other you) is evident in her compassion, kindness and training our bodies so that we can be congruent with our actions.
Ricardo
From Tampico, Northern Mexico, Ricardo loves movement and the interaction between body and mind. He began yoga to improve alignment in martial arts competitions and immediately fell in love with its focus on balance. His trainings have focused on Vinyasa Flow Yoga and Mobility and Weight Training. Ricardo’s recently taken sabbatical to host retreats around the hemisphere but he teaches at Tribal when he’s in Tulum and will offer some mobility intensives in the fall. Maya
Maya teaches Vinyasa Flow at Tribal Tulum. She has more than 10 years experience teaching and loves using different techniques to accommodate all levels of students. Her flows are based heavily on the Ashtanga Yoga Tradition but she adapts that sequencing to create classes that observe the breath and create subtle change and movement in the body. She applies the “use of different yoga techniques to realize the natural state of yoga that is inherent in each one of us.” She is E RYT Yoga Alliance certified to both 200 and 500 hours completing most of her trainings with Michael Gannon in Playa del Carmen.
Mariana
Mariana is from Guadalajara, Mexico. “Yoga changed my life and helped me cure physical and emotional problems and helped me to respect and accept myself”. Mariana’s classes are invigorating and she incorporates how yoga helps us live less accelerated lives and be in the moment into them. Balancing postures are her favorites because “you can see yourself and your students build confidence, something that improves each and every person’s life.“ Mariana studied with Ellen de Jonge and Alan Montaño in 2016 and 2018 Mariana and is one of our favourite online class teachers. - Photo by Georges Schemagin
Blanca
With 20 years’ experience as a yoga instructor, Blanca is particularly happy here in Tulum.“ She thrives on the diversity of students from all over the globe and at every level of experience. She studied yoga at the KYM institute that was founded by the great yoga master Krishna Macharya. She teaches Hatha Flow at tribal, various intensives on advanced asanas and is available for private classes. You can see her on her You Tube channel “Blanca Azucena Calderon Vaenzuela”.
